On tonight’s Prime Time, in the face of pleading desperate questions from all concerned on how the Government was going to deal with the mind numbing chasm in public finances, all the ‘Minister for something not all that important’ could say was that the Government would consider everything going forward in order to address the crisis.

Would consider everything.

You would think, at this stage, that they’d have considered everything by now. That working day and night they would have a long list of scalable, innovative and applicable plans and scenarios.

But it seems not. Not for the first time, instead of imbuing confidence, you get the impression they’re more scared and clueless than we are.

And that’s the rub. Just watching them fills one with dread. And it makes one draw ever more inward. To mentally and financially prepare for the worst. To stop spending, watch the money because no one knows who is next.

We are in a terrible spiral.

And it all seems pretty bloody hopeless tonight.

Helicopters and Banks

Reading the Irish Times site tonight, I couldn’t help but mull over two of the front page stories.

On one hand, we have those redoubtable scally wags at a major Irish bank doing what they do best – losing magnificent amounts of money. In this case, another squillion gold shillings, putting us.. well, you get the point.

And on the other hand, we have Martin Cullen (Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism) escaping injury as the door of the Air Corps helicopter he was riding in fell off whilst flying over Killarney National Park on the way back from an Irish Hotels Federation Conference. Luckily, he landed at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club.

Now I’m having one of those partial ephiphanies I sometimes have. Not, I hasten to add, the sort of ephiphany a genius has. When the fog of incomprehension clears and the truth stands in clear sight.

No, these are partial epiphanies. When a part of my mind – obviously not one of the major bits which are concerned with loftier concerns like stuffing my face -can tenuously discern shapes in the fog of reality, true insights into the alternate dimension in which this fabulous country exists.

And deep down, so encoded that it would make Enigma look the Daily Star’s daily puzzle, there is something deeply resonant in a bank we, the humble tax payers, have guaranteed losing 96 per cent of it’s value and a Government Minister being shocked as the door on his helicopter falls off on the way back from a hotel conference.

What the connection is though… beats me.
